3× NRPA Gold Medal Award Winner

The National Recreation and Park Association Gold Medal is the highest honor in American parks and recreation management. Orland Park has won it three times — one of a very small number of communities to achieve this distinction. The award recognizes excellence in long-range planning, professional administration, and innovative programming. Winning once is exceptional; winning three times is a statement about institutional culture.

Deep History

Heritage Sites

Among the most underappreciated aspects of Orland Park's recreation programming is the active preservation of pre-village heritage. The park district stewards three historic properties that predate the modern suburb by over a century.

🏚️
John Humphrey House
1840s Farmhouse
An 1840s farmhouse preserved as a heritage site by the park district. Humphrey was among the earliest European settlers of the Orland Township area. The structure represents the pre-railroad agricultural era of the Illinois prairie.
🌾
Boley Farm
Historic Agricultural Site
A preserved historic farm site within the park district's heritage portfolio. Part of the effort to document and maintain the agricultural landscape that preceded Orland Park's post-war suburban transformation.
🐄
Stellwagen Farm
Historic Agricultural Site
Another historic farm site preserved in the park district's heritage programming. Together, these three properties tell the story of the land before La Grange Road became a restaurant corridor — when this was all prairie farmland worked by German and Bohemian immigrant families.
